QUODITCH MOOR NATURE RESERVE
A WALK IN JUNE

Field Four

Field four, which covers an area of 3.3 acres (1.32 hectares), was reclaimed from woodland some years ago and is going through a stage of regeneration. It is our intention to keep it as a field and allow the culm species to grow. This means that as the new trees start to grow they must be removed. You can also see the piles of brushwood still lying around. Although these stunt the growth of new grass they also act as homes for many animals, particularly frogs, toads and lizards.

There is a great variety of tree species around the edge of this field. At this time of the year the Rowans (Sorbus aucuparia) on the eastern side are out in flower.

This field has a good selection of ferns, probably because it was woodland until a few years ago.

The differing grasses are coming into flower.

One problem that has developed in this field again is that we have found piles of fresh bark on the ground under the beech trees on the west side. Something has been stripping off the bark about twenty feet up. This is, most likely, squirrels who like to suck the sap.
If not stopped this will kill the trees.

The Ringlet butterflies are also around.

Here is the first Meadow Brown of 2009.

We get a superb variety of Hoverflies at Quoditch , especially in Field Four

Here's another . Many are pseudo bees or wasps. But notice the eyes are more fly-like and at first glance they appear to only have one set of wings.

These has been seen before at Quoditch . It's Helophilus pendulus

This looks more like a bee to us, but we could be wrong. Some of them are pretty clever at disguising themselves. Any comments?

There were lots of these in June 2009

Here is the female Azure Damselfly photographed in June 2009. This can be identified by the two short black lines on the side of the thorax (Powell, 1999)

This Thick legged flower beetle (Oedemera nobilis) was also found in June 2009.
