Mythology and tradition.

An old Devon saying was

"An even leaved ash and a four leafed clover, you see your true love ere the day is over."

The Ash is a native tree of Devon. It was the tradition in years past in the county to cut a bundle of ash sticks (an ashen faggot) and hang it in the house throughout the year.

It is a very tough and elastic wood and was used in the construction of coaches, cars and aeroplanes. Because of its elasticity it was used in weaponry to make spears and bows.

The trunk of the tree looks like this.

In Autumn the Ash produces seeds. They're called keys.

At one time ash keys were used by the medical profession as a cure for flatulence. Preserved in vinegar and salt they were eaten as a pickle.
