QUODITCH EDUCATION DEVON

 QUODITCH MOOR NATURE RESERVE

A WALK IN MAY

Field Five

Field Five covers an area of 4.75 acres (1.92 hectares) and is mainly dense woodland with lots of thin spindly trees.
The woodland floor is quite dark and wet underneath, but the whole area provides lots of shelter for the deer. Towards the north of the field they have a wallow, which, at this time of the year is filled with tadpoles.
Our plan is to clear glades in the woodland as time and energy allow to bring back the native grasses.
Everywhere you go you can see logs that have fallen from the trees and have been allowed to rot back down. They provide homes for many creatures as well as lichen and mosses.
This fungus was found on a branch that had fallen over the deer wallow

Under the trees the ferns are beginning to show their leaves.

Near the deer wallow a blackbird has built its nest in the fork of a tree only about a foot from the ground.

Sadly a week after this picture was taken the nest was empty. Hardly a surprise with such a vulnerable location.
